Anniversary tour Uranostind 150 years

On July 19, 1876, the jotunologist Emanuel Mohn and the Englishman William Cecil Slingsby climbed Uranostind (2157 m) during their spectacular trek through Jotunheimen with a number of first ascents. Pioneer Emanuel Mohn's enthusiasm for Uranostind as a mountain peak is overwhelming, and he measures it against Galdepiggen:

It cannot have its immense breadth, but it must be more peculiar, more varied, more enlightening and more beautiful. When it comes to this, that the ascent does not require more time than up to Galdhøytind, that it is without any danger (...), then I do not take it into account to make the prediction that in a few years, when the climbers are in a slightly better group and there has been a large hotel on Eidsbugarden, where you can get proper beds and sufficient food, then Uranåstind will become an equally sought-after place of pilgrimage for the people of Jötunheim Pilgrim, as Galdhøtind now is.

In 1892, Tyinholmen Hotel was built and has since been located at the foot of Uranostind and has been the natural starting point for climbing Uranostind. With "decent beds and sufficient food."

Together with Jotunheimen Eventen, we are arranging guided tours to Uranostind this summer, and marking the Jubilee Year with two events:

July 19: Anniversary trip, Uranostind:

  • We mark the 150th anniversary with a memorable summit hike in historic trails. The guided hike goes over glaciers, and assumes that you are motivated for a long day in the mountains and are in normal physical shape.

July 23: Anniversary tour, dinner and lecture:

  • After climbing Uranostind with a guide, an anniversary dinner awaits with the same menu that Cecil Slingsby and Emanuel Mohn ate after their first ascent in 1876.
  • With the lecture "150 years of climbing sports and joy on the peaks", Knut Ihlen Tønsberg will take us through the exciting story that the two pioneers began in the summer of 1876. Knut comes from a family with long climbing traditions and climbed Store Skagadølstind himself at the age of 13,

While Emanuel Mohn predicted Uranostind as a popular tourist destination, Cecil Slingsby's account from Uranostind is more picturesque:

To the west, just above the dark gorge of Utladalen, Hurrungane shows its most imposing side, and flaunts the refined lines of the Jostedalsbreen glacier into the distance as a strikingly effective round horizon to its dramatic surroundings. To the north and east, hundreds of weather-beaten peaks and magical spires rise in a row. To the south and southeast lie Tyin and Bygdin with their vast sky mirrors and look more flattering than from anywhere else»

Join us and experience what the climbing pioneers called ""one of the most magnificent views in Jotunheimen"!

Summer trips

In the summer, the surroundings invite you to mountain hikes of all kinds. We offer guiding to the legendary peaks Uranostind and Falketind or other peaks of your choice. Other less ambitious peaks, but which still have fantastic views, are Utsikten and Torshammeren, which most people reach in a two-three hour round trip.

In addition, it is lovely to cycle along Lake Tyin and not least into the beautiful Koldedalen valley. The old road from Tyin to Årdal is also a great cycle ride, with the spectacular so-called 1000-meter as a highlight. It is also nice to push a stroller in the area.

Many people also come to fish for the famous trout in Tyin or to fish in other lakes and rivers. There are plenty of opportunities for this.

But it is the hiking opportunities that attract most guests to us. More information can be found here:
