Tyinholmen is one of the most traditional tourist places in Jotunheimen. Tyinholmen was established as early as 1892 by John Opdal, great-great grandfather to the current owner. It was in this area the mountain tourism started in Norway.
Many famous people and great personalities have visited Tyinholmen over the years. Among the most famous are the composer Edvard Grieg, mountaineer Cecil Slingsby, painter Erik Werenskiold and poet Aasmund Olafson Vinje. Norway's last three kings have also visited Tyinholmen.
Hereby an overview of the incredible history of Tyinholmen: • 1892: Tyinholmen hotel was established of John Opdal, who also was one of the owners of Tyin Hotel • 1906: The motorboat "Tyin" started its operation between Tyin Hotel and Tyinholmen and the boating route is established • 1911: Helge Opdal, (son of John) is the new owner of Tyinholmen. The hotel can accomodate 33 guests. • 1927: Tyinholmen starts operate for winterseason • 1928: Helge Opdal expands the hotel with new lounges and several new bedrooms in the 2nd floor • 1933: Tyinholmen imports a Zitroen snowmobile, which has previously been operating in the Sahara desert • 1936: Tyinholmen develop a motorsledge together with Viggo Widerøe (founder of Widerøes airline) • 1946: JVB establish a snowmobile route with several Bombardier snowmobiles in operation between Tyin - Tyinholmen - Eidsbugarden. • 1955: The first light aircrafts are based at Tyinholmen, and for the next 25 years they became a popular attraction for the hotel guests. • 1958: The road into Tyinholmen is officially opened, which also meant the end of the boat route at lake Tyin • 1959: Lake Tyin is regulated with 9 meters, which also implied that the old Tyinholmen Hotel had to be torn down • 1960: The new Tyinholmen mountain hotel with 110 beds is officially opened • 1961: Helge Opdal receives the Kings golden Order of Merit, as the first person within hotel and tourism in Norway • 1972: Helge Opdal (son of John) is the new owner Tyinholmen. • 1979: The entire Tyinholmen mountain hotel, tragically burns down - large and irreplaceable values were lost • 1980: The Jotunheimen national park is founded, which also meant the end of plane trips to the glaciers • 1983: A new Tyinholmen lodge including 10 cabins was opened • 1995: Øystein Opdal (current owner), is the new owner of Tyinholmen • 2003: Ole og Marie Skogstad (todays host and hostess) take over the operationSee picture galleries (below) from the different time periods at Tyinholmen:
